The original Museum building which was created from the lock-up coal yard

In 1957 it was decided to convert the small lock-up coal yard into a museum building. The work was done by the Midland Area of the TRPS and it was opened in September 1959 by John Scholes, Curator of Relics to the British Transport Commission.
During 1961 a little 2ft gauge locomotive was donated by the Scottish Gas Board. This was an 0-4-0 well tank designed to run under the coke ovens and push wagons under the retorts at Dundee Gas Works. This was followed by the even smaller Dot, an 18 in gauge 0-4-0 tank built by Beyer Peacock in 1887 for the company’s works at Gorton, Manchester, presented to the museum in 1962.
